The company was founded in 1949 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, by Earl E. Bakken and Palmer J. Hermundslie. Medtronic of Canada Ltd. was the first subsidiary of Medtronic outside the United States, operating in Vancouver as of August 1968. The Canadian head office was relocated to Mississauga in 1974. Since 2009, the Brampton campus is now the Canadian Headquarters housing our training and education centre, sales, marketing, and administrative functions. The existing Mississauga campus continues to house Medtronic of Canada’s Operations and Distribution Centre.
Medtronic of Canada employs over 420 Canadians. It has regional offices in Vancouver and Montreal, and an atrial fibrillation ablation catheter manufacturing facility – Medtronic Cryocath – in the Montreal metropolitan area which employs another 220 employees. Medtronic of Canada has sustained consistent growth over the years and continues to attract top talent in the industry.
Medtronic's new headquarters was designed according to Leadership in Energy Efficiency & Design (LEED) principles to provide an energy efficient work space using innovative, state of the art technology to reduce our impact on the environment.
Some of the energy saving technologies include:

- Over 44% reduction in indoor potable water use
- Over 75% of construction waste diverted from landfill
- Healthy non-toxic interiors and superior air quality

Camp Oki
The Medtronic Foundation is pleased to support Camp Oki, a summer camp for children with congenital heart disease. With staff support from the Hospital for Sick Children's Cardiac Program, the camp operates a free one-week program in Muskoka for children with pacemakers and defibrillators.
